We are aware of the confusion and concern regarding our students’ education and how their learning has had to adapt to the ongoing situation regarding Covid-19. We look forward to when our students can return to the classroom and resume their studies in a formal setting. However, in the interim, we are continuing to do everything that we can to ensure that our students can continue to flourish and thrive in their education.

Continued isolation and social distancing is set to continue for another week but is likely to be extended beyond that by at least another 3 weeks. This will have several effects on the upcoming end of the academic year:

School Opening/Closures

• All schools are now closed for students aside except for vulnerable students and the children of key workers.

• The reopening of schools will be a priority for the government as part of the first stage of a return to normality. This should relieve pressure on families currently responsible for homeschooling their children.

• At present, September is considered the most likely date for reopening as the start of a new academic year although some discussions are in place for a June reopening date.

• There is currently little expectation from schools that international students will return immediately upon the reopening of schools due to anxiety regarding travel and concern regarding a potential resurgence of Covid-19.

Examinations

• All GCSE and A level examinations have been cancelled for the Summer of 2020.

• Those students due to take GCSEs (years 11) or A-Levels (years 13) will be awarded grades by their teachers based on their predicted grades and current submission of work. These students will also be ranked in order of their attainment. This ranking will be entirely confidential.

• Any grades set by teachers or schools will be moderated and will reflect a similar grade average as awardedby the school in previous years.

• Students will be able to appeal the process through which they receive a grade but not the grade itself.

• If students are unhappy with their awarded grades they may choose to sit their GCSE or A level exams at the earliest possible opportunity in the new academic year once Covid-19 has been dealt with. For core subjects such as English, Maths and Science, this opportunity will likely to be before December. For more specialised subjects, this opportunity may fall in summer in 2021.

Our advice

• We recommend to our students that you do not stop studying for GCSE or A Level examinations. They are still coming and you have a rare opportunity of more time to study for exams in the new academic year.

• Stay on good terms and communicate well with your school to help secure the class ranking and grades that you are aiming for.

• Send plenty of work to school and to teachers to demonstrate that you have taken ownership of your learning and are continuing to hold yourself to account. If you study hard and ask for help when you need it then your teachers will always go the extra mile to support you in making good academic progress.

• Make sure all of your work is completed to a high standard - do the basics right. Taking an extra 5 minutes to read over your work or researching how to improve its quality will ensure that you continue to learn, improve, and flourish in your education.
