University History Admissions

History is not just the study of the past, it provides a window through which you can view the future.

By the time you arrive at the point of taking up the subject at university you’ll understand that history truly is subjective and that the thrill of your study comes from unpicking the truth from varying sources. It is fascinating to see the perspectives of different groups or individuals observing the same conditions or situations. The more you look, the more you find, the more you can understand the world in which we live today.

History is divided into times and locations with most university courses allowing you to choose your modules to suit your interests. I would recommend taking some familiar modules that will help to boost your grades but, at the same time, take on something new. It is a time to learn, and a time to discover.

Entry Requirements

Writing personal statements is a real art. See what the expert has to say:

‘Don’t simply write things such as “I think history is vital to understanding the world we live in”. Say why you think so, and include one or two examples of historical topics you have found interesting, and again say why – but keep these examples concise.’

Dr. Stephen Pigney | History Admissions Tutor – Goldsmiths University Of London

You need to choose the themes of your interest. Why are you applying for history? Why did you do each prize? Where did it lead you next? These are the interesting questions that you need to tackle. Choose 2 or 3 key ideas to focus your work around.
