Many children and young people often misunderstand concepts surrounding ‘money’, the ‘economy’, ‘economics’ and ‘business’ and struggle to grasp how money works. The phrase ‘money makes the world go round’ is often used, but not fully understood. Handling money and understanding how business works is not something that is usually taught as part of the core curriculum at school, unless elected by students as part of their exam options. This means that in early adulthood, young people need support in understanding these important ideas.

As part of the Online Summer School, Libra Education will be running two courses surrounding money matters this July and August. As part of these courses, students will complete a project that they will present to their classmates and tutors to demonstrate their understanding and the work they have being doing.

The Young Finance course targets students under the age of 15 who have a beginner level understanding of finance. They will work with their online classmates and their tutor to cover issues surrounding money, saving, budgeting and also consider basic business functions. By the end of the week, students will have created their own business model and will have a much deeper understanding of how money works.

The Wealth Planning course is targeted at over 15s and takes the above concepts to the next level. Students will examine key monetary concepts such as expenditure, interest rates, investment, budgeting, assets, cash flow and currency exchange. They will also analyse the stock market and expenditure.

Not only will these courses give students more confidence in discussing money, business and the economy, but the project work is also an excellent opportunity to gain a new skill and experience that can be used as a discussion point for future school and university interviews.
