G5 popular courses

The G5 is always popular, and rightly so, but some courses are more popular than others. It’s important that you understand the trends that are driving more or less competitiveness in the market, and allow this data to help you pick the best majors.

Which majors are hot?

Some majors are always popular. Every year they have the highest application rates and this means it can make sense to avoid these subjects if you are not the strongest applicant. Here are the hot majors:

1.     Economics – anything with pure Economics is always a popular topic with local and international students.

2.     Finance – often this is more popular than Economics!

3.     Natural Science – these courses, and those related, at Cambridge are highly popular.

4.     Computer Science – perhaps the most popular modern course today!

Which majors are not?

Whilst there is no easy ride into the G5, there are some subjects that are decidedly easier than others. Let’s take a look at which ones are which.

1.     Land Economy – not as easy as it was, but still a great alternative to Economics.

2.     Management – another great alternative to Economics or Finance.

3.     Science courses (Oxford) – these are less competitive than Cambridge.

4.     Electrical Engineering – a great alternative to Computer Science.

Should you use data alone?

This information is valuable, but it shouldn’t make up all of your decision-making. This needs to be offset with consideration about the level of your studies, and the specialty of your knowledge. If all your experience is focused on a competitive major, it might still make sense to pursue that line of study.
