University Linguistics Admissions

This is such an unusual degree but, if I had my time again, I think I would choose this as my degree. Not many people know what it really means to study Linguistics and confuse it with studying a language like French, German or Mandarin. It couldn’t be more different.

Linguistics is the study of word form and language formation. It examines how language comes together and develops over time. As much as anything else, it examines people and the world through the guise of languages. What a course to choose!

What can you do with a degree in Linguistics?

You develop immense analytical skills whilst studying this course. It is formed around words and you’ll certainly be able to discuss the ideas verbally and in written form with real strength. If you can’t at the start of the course you’ll be able to by the end.

Cambridge list several possible careers that a degree in linguistics can lead you to. These include:

·      Journalism

·      Translation

·      Marketing

·      Public Service (think James Bond but without the suit!)

·      Law

·      Teaching

It is a highly academic degree that will allow you to take on any job in the corporate or public world. Go for it!

Entry Requirements

You will be able to apply for linguistics without any specific A Levels or qualifications however having said that, you’ll probably benefit from having some experience with languages. The good news is that if you are an international student you have a good chance of applying successfully even if you don’t want to study your mother-tongue.

The desired A Level choices would be something like:

·      English

·      Maths

·      A language

·      A science

Try and be broad with your choices. Professors like it if you have lots of different facets to your application. Breath is better than depth. Read more from Cambridge right here: https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/linguistics
