University reading list: Computer Science
A what’s what of Computer Science need-to-know information.
Computer Scientists are in huge demand at the moment. They have a huge knowledge across a great deal of complicated areas. Here’s the reading list that will help you reach that level
The New Turing Omnibus
This fantastic book offers 66 separate slices of insight. Whether you are just coming to terms with the varied world of computer science or you are a seasoned professional this will be the right book for you. It is accessible and yet will push and challenge even the hardiest of souls. You will need some basic knowledge, particularly in math, to get into this book. Namely, make sure you have a good understanding of non-computable functions, information on algorithms, computer viruses and more.
How To Think Like a Mathematician
This is another book that is not as intimidating as others you might come across. It’s a friendly face, in a sea of numbers and calculations. The authors in this case were mindful that you might want something to ease you into a university way of thinking and they set out to create the perfect text. This will develop your techniques helping you to tackle more complex problems when you finally arrive at university. It’ll have you solving mathematical problems in no time at all.
Computational Thinking
This is a window into the mind of a computer. Not literally of course, but pretty close. Within these pages, it will build an idea of the powers and limits of computing and consider how they interface with humans. Problem-solving is the central theme of this book. Consider how you solve problems. Will that be the same as a computer? Almost always the answer is no. This book will explain why and how.
