Libra Group Course for Math Kangaroo Competition
A Math Group Course is coming!
After we released the news that we would run Architecture & Design course, Economics course, and Junior Prize course during the coming winter break, many students and their parents came to us and asked, “Is there no science-related group course this year?”, “Could you please organize a science group course for us?”, or “I want to apply for a computer science course next year and I need to take part in a math project, so do you have a math course to help me get fully prepared?
For many students in the penultimate year of pre-university education (usually aged 16-18), it can be stressful to participate in extracurricular competitions or carry out an academic project while trying hard to achieve or maintain the highest marks and prepare for the university applications. Nevertheless, award-winning or even competition/project participation experiences are important for anyone who wants to apply for a science course offered by a top university.
Although winning an award can be inspiring, your participation can also be valuable when it comes to skills improvement, confidence building, and personal statement composition. After carefully reviewing global mathematics, physics, and chemistry competitions that usually take place in winter and spring, we made a decision to organise an additional Math Group Course to support our students with the Math Kangaroo competition.
What is Math Kangaroo?
The history of Math Kangaroo can be traced back to the 1980s when Peter O’Halloran, an Australian mathematician and teacher, proposed an interesting mathematical contest in his country. The questions in this contest were engaging and thought-provoking, which covered mathematical topics of algebra, geometry, and logic. Since then, Math Kangaroo spread throughout Europe and the world at large at a fast pace. Hundreds of thousands of students from France, the United States, Germany, Canada, and other countries began to take part in this global mathematics event.
Math Kangaroo is now one of the largest competitions for school students in the world, with more than 6.3 million participants from over 80 countries. Different from the International Mathematical Olympiad, the main purposes of Math Kangaroo are to stimulate students' interest in learning, cultivate their mathematical thinking, develop their analytical and problem-solving abilities and help them understand the applications of mathematical knowledge in nature’s laws and human activities. With these objectives, Math Kangaroo encourages students of any age to engage themselves with mathematical questions in the contest.
All you need to know about Math Kangaroo:
Difficulty Levels: Six levels (the higher the level, the more difficult the contest)
Contest Format: Individual written test (multiple-choice questions with a total score of 120)
Registration Deadline: 18th March 2022
Contest Date: 16th April 2022 (Saturday)

What can Libra Education offer you?
In the winter break of the 2021/2022 academic year, we will provide the Math Group Course for our students to help them with Math Kangaroo Level 6 contest. Anyone who is 16-18 years old and interested in mathematics should attend this course because you will meet think-alike peers and receive guidance from our top math tutor. This group course will last 8 days with 10 tuition sessions in total and our dedicated tutor will lead you to familiarise yourself with the contest, support you to acquire all essential mathematical knowledge and understand how it applies to real life, help you build your speed and accuracy, and develop confidence and ambition. Our tutor James is an Oxford graduate with a strong passion for mathematics and tutoring. He has many years of tutoring experience and has supported students on their subject courses, contest preparations, and university applications.
According to previous years’ data, students who attended our course were highly likely to win an award. Nonetheless, as mentioned, awards are never the ultimate goals. What really matters is that the participation experience helps students consolidate mathematical knowledge and becomes an essential part of their personal statements which can demonstrate their engagement with mathematics beyond their school curriculums. Carol, one of our students who attended the group course and took part in the competition afterwards, mentioned in her personal statement that Math Kangaroo helped her have a better understanding of how mathematical knowledge can be applied to different human activities, which further motivated her to investigate more on applied subjects. She chose Engineering as her preferred course when applying to universities and received offers from Imperial College, University College London, and other Russell Group universities.
As we all know, mathematics is a basic subject, laying the foundation of other science subjects. So why not join our Math Group Course and participate in Math Kangaroo so as to create more possibilities for yourself to secure a place on Science Courses at the world's top universities.
