An engaging and imaginative course that develops students’ creative writing skills. The course leader and students work together using language techniques and creative writing stimuli to expand the students’ imagination and ability to express themselves.

Creative Writing
A course that hones students’ creative writing skills to develop their descriptive vocabulary and mastery of language techniques.
The junior course is designed for students aged 8-11 years.
Course timings and dates:
Monday 26th- Friday 30th July 2021
9am - 11.15am UK time each day
The first session each day is from 9am-10am followed by a short break. The second session of the day begins at 10.15am and finishes at 11.15am.
The maximum number of students within each group will be 4 students.
Course requirements:
A computer with good internet access.
Zoom with permissions enabled.
Basic understanding of how to use Microsoft Word.
30 minutes of independent tasks between sessions. .
Learning outcomes: By the end of the course, the student will have:
Improved their understanding of the Python programming language;
Increased their ability to code functions; and
Developed a creative project to demonstrate their grasp of Python.
Course structure
Students will complete two sessions per day
Session 1:
Key Concepts in Creative Writing
Students are introduced to good practice in creative writing alongside key elements of grammar.
Session 2:
Descriptive Language Techniques
Students learn and apply language techniques to improve their description of characters, settings and events alongside key elements of grammar.
Session 3:
Planning your Writing
Students are taught how to plan their creative writing effectively for structure and content alongside key elements of grammar.
Session 4:
Vivid Settings
Students study the importance of setting and how it can make the story more vivid to envelop the reader.
Session 5:
Character Investment
Students study the importance of well-designed characters and how they lead to the reader’s investment in the story.
Session 6:
Brainstorming
Students are taught how to draw inspiration from a creative writing stimulus and use it to brainstorm alongside key elements of grammar for essay-writing.
Session 7:
Different Types of Narratives
Students learn different types of narratives, suitable structures and the advantages of each.
Session 8:
Redrafting your Writing
Students are taught how to redraft their creative writing effectively and how to write under pressured situations.
Session 9:
Evaluating your Writing
Students are taught final writing pitfalls to avoid and why before evaluating a variety of creative writing extracts for what makes them good or bad.
Session 10:
Presentations & Feedback
Students present their final creative writing piece. Students give and receive constructive feedback from their course leader and peers.
